Weather Related School Closing

SPCPA is a unique school with students coming from all over the seven-county Twin Cities metro area and beyond—including western Wisconsin. This creates a distinct challenge with decisions about closing school due to weather.

Because weather conditions vary greatly between counties and even cities, it would not be unusual that different parts of our student population and their families would be experiencing different weather on any given day.

Cancelling school is a tremendously difficult and complicated decision for any school and a decision that impacts hundreds of families in very different ways. Be assured that these decisions are always made with the safety of students in mind.

Closure Announcement Procedure

Announcements are only made in the event that school is closed—not when it remains open.

Unless you hear otherwise, assume spcpa school is in session.

Remember: SPCPA is its own district. We are not part of the St Paul Public Schools district. We will always be listed independent of SPPS.

Thresholds for Closings

More than 50% of the Twin Cities metro area is experiencing sustained wind chills below –40°F or air temperatures below –25°F
Metro Transit buses and trains won’t start or run dependably
Area road conditions are dangerous or impassable

Make-up Days

The SPCPA school calendar allows for two full days to be cancelled without requiring any make up days. In the event of a third cancellation, the board will use their best judgment to adjust the school calendar in the spring to make up this missed classroom time. Past accommodations have included half days being extended to full days and/or days off being turned into regular school days.

Late Starts

As we have students from over 40 different school districts and taking into consideration Metro Transit schedules, SPCPA is not able to use late starts as an alternative to full-day closings.

If your home district is closed while SPCPA remains open and you determine that it is not safe for your student to travel to and from school that day, please call the attendance hotline before 9:00am with that information and their absence will be excused.
