The Music Department prepares talented and motivated students for a range of successful music careers and for admission to the finest colleges and music conservatories in the country. Students will take four years of Music Theory, Composition/Song Writing, and Music Reading. Every student will rehearse in large ensembles, small ensembles, and have the opportunity to explore solo work. Eurhythmics, Ear Training, Recording, Keyboarding, Music Production, and Electronic Music supplement the core curriculum. Each year brings performance opportunities for the students. The Music Department serves students on all instruments, including those students who are vocalists, whose primary instrument is their voice.

A contemporary and jazz strand will engage students on all rock, pop, and jazz instruments with contemporary and popular music as well as music from the standard and contemporary jazz repertoire (though every genre of music will be explored). A focus will be placed on the creation of new music.

A symphonic strand is offered for those students who play a traditional symphonic instrument. Students will engage with music from both the classical and contemporary chamber music repertoire.

Vocal students will have separate singing classes. Professional singers will guide motivated students to develop their voices and performance abilities, study a variety of song repertoire, and explore the art of songwriting. Over the course of their time at SPCPA, Vocal Arts students develop their voices, learn to accompany themselves on an instrument, learn to work with current music technology, and sing extensively with instrumentalists in ensembles and bands.
