SPCPA Building Company
Charter school facilities are addressed in Minnesota Statutes 124D.10 and 124D.11:
- Charter schools must lease space for facilities
- Charter schools cannot own buildings directly if they use public funds to purchase or build a facility
- Charter schools may have an affiliated nonprofit building corporation that owns the building and leases to the school, if the school meets certain criteria
- Charter schools are eligible for lease aid to assist in paying the lease costs
The need for suitable space spurred the creation of a building company. Described above, charter schools may have an affiliated nonprofit building corporation that owns space and leases it to the school. The SPCPA Building Company was founded to suit this purpose.
The SPCPA Building Company purchased the current space in the Lowry Building in 2013. Construction on the first and second floors was completed for the start of the 2013-2014 school year. The third floor wing was completed later that school year.
